Abstracting Yellowstone is a series of drawings that reduce the complexity of Yellowstone’s hot springs to a series of lines. The cream paper reflects the dirt that surrounds the hot springs and the thermophiles that color them. The texture of the paper allows the charcoal lines to be bumpy like the rocks in the area. The scale of the series as a whole manifests the grandeur of the springs, and the park as a whole. There is a play with intimacy since, to see the details of the drawings, the viewer must be close to the drawings to see the faint lines.
